Actos

is a medication of the thiazolidinedione class that is pretty new. It's used on it's own or in combination with other medication including the hormone insulin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The medication reduces blood sugar levels and boosts the body's sensitivity to insulin. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Actos in the late 90s.

Type-2 diabetes currently effects nearly twenty million Americans. It is a condition that involves high blood glucose amounts due to the body's inability to effectively use insulin. However, if the issue is left untreated, it can result in loss of sight, kidney complications, and cardiovascular disease, and bladder cancer.

Shortly after the authorization of Actos, an additional thiazolidinedione called Rezulin, was removed from the shelves because various reports surfaced regarding people that developed fatal liver disease after taking the drug.

Actos Safety measures Introduced by the Food and Drug Administration

More cases came forward after individuals took Actos or Avandia and developed congestive heart disease which pressed the ADA and the American Heart Association to issue an alert for diabetes sufferers taking Actos because they were at an increased risk of developing heart disease and bladder cancer.

The FDA recently released a new warning based on its review of details from a continuous clinical trial which showed Actos increased the risk of people developing bladder cancer following taking the medication for more than a year. Because of this, the FDA required the producers of Actos to release and now include a black box warning (greatest and strongest label change) concerning the severe dangers associated with use of the drug.

Currently, the FDA is still going over trials to decide whether more actions, such as a recall, is needed. There are many unwanted effects connected with Actos. You should seek medical treatment if you experience:

• shortness of breath or trouble breathing • chest ache • overwhelming fatigue • unnatural heartrate • dilated neck veins • swelling of face, fingers, feet, or calves • reduced urine output • weight gain

Presently, the FDA is advising medical professionals not to use Actos on patients that have bladder cancer. People ought to speak with his or her medical professional concerning any concerns they might have.

The FDA says diabetics should also inform their health care professional if they're experiencing symptoms of bladder cancer such as

• Blood in the Urine • Pain While Urinating • Frequent Urination • Feeling of Needing to Urinate With no Results
