List of tools and projects

This is an (incomplete) list of projects and tools for action and reflection that emerged during the last 5 to 7 years.

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations. The Knowledge Lab is hence also an attempt to claim back some of the university's space, resources and know-how from the military-industrial complex and make them available for people concerned about and working against the status quo of unceasing commodification, exploitation, war, and biospherical destruction.


Welcome to the Wiki of AUL - the Autonomous University of Lancaster, which is kindly hosted by the Knowledge Lab. The Aim of AUL is to help people from Lancaster to educate themselves. The Pirate University is a self-institution, created and run by BA/BSc (Hons) Digital Art & Technology students at The University of Plymouth, designed to facilitate the free exchange of their skills and knowledge. Drawing inspiration from other free universities (such as The University of Openess), the project is a social comment on the increasing commodification of education.

University of Openness: The uo is a framework in which individuals and organisations can persue their shared interest in emerging forms of cultural production and critical reflection such as unix, cartography, physical and collaborative research.

Any member may start a faculty to socialise their research with the Uo. For more information, see the FacultyHowTo page.

The uo:

   * is a user led facility of learning and research with many temporary physical campuses, and one less temporary one at LimehouseTownHall, London, and many online presences.
   * runs a core curriculum and regular classes, and at present has several faculties listed and linked to from the HomePage.
   * is administered by an orgiastic board with a floating Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and self-elected members of various denominations. The Quorum is established as the majority of the members in the room.
   * is open to solicitation for prospective classes, faculties, symposia and more than you can possibly imagine.

uo facilities include a media-lab, map room, library, wikis, a wireless industrial unit, and other distributed campus services.

In light of recent proposals for allowing extortionate 'top up fees' to be charged for education in the uk, and the increasing tendency of universities to prioritise commercially sponsored research (and to allow that research to become intellectual property of the sponsors), free (in both senses of the word) educational institutions such as the uo are more needed than ever.

M:I Mobilised Investigation The idea of this project is to create a (non-physical) space for convergence on an international level and with some ongoing activities like a website and an email list. Within this space we hope an active network will start to develop, where investigators meet and initiate projects, share publications research projects, organise seminars, call out for revolution etc....

CASA (Cultural Analysis Summer Academy) emerged out of discussions about the function of academia in society, and about the role of the academic or the intellectual in society. Over the past year the world system has changed dramatically(....)As young academics we see ourselves faced with the double challenge of international politics that disregard the opinion of citizens and the neoliberalist politics that seek to take control over public services away from the public. While we do believe that academics have a responsibility towards their society, we realize that society seems to be less and less interested in academia and in what academics --- especially those coming from the humanities --- have to say. At the same time many academics seem to withdraw deeper into the Ivory Tower. For these reasons we feel that the responsibilities of academics and the role of the academy within society have to be rethought.

ephemera is an electronic forum for developing and extending discussions of critical perspectives on organization.

ephemera is transdisciplinary and encourages contributions from a broad spectrum of academics, researchers, activists, practitioners, employees and other members of organizations.

ephemera invites critical discussions of a range of issues relating to organizations and organizing in their widest senses.

ephemera encourages a focus on the ephemeral nature of the present, emphasising change, transition, possibility, becoming, movement, difference, transience, mortality, variation, engagement, intervention, metamorphosis.
