WHAT?

A five-stage workshop (Leeds-Paris-NaplesBucharestItaly) between artists Charlie Jeffery (Paris) and Dan Robinson (Leeds) in dialogue with the cluster “[Spaces of] temporary permanence” (Leeds). To research, produce and adapt a series of artworks as a Mud Office residency project for TRANSIENT SPACES.

HOW?

The working process would be a performative production of collage, video, furniture, sculpture, discussions and text. This mass of material will be accumulated, collaged, edited and refashioned across and between the three sites. Two preliminary workshops in Leeds and Paris will prepare the ground.

WHY?

MUD THE SITE-SPECIFIC ARTIST TOURIST We propose to inhabit a problematic role as visiting artist / tourist. Attempting to make site-sensitive work whilst acknowledging the futility of engaging meaningfully with the locality as ‘foreign visitors’. To critically examine these subject positions as potential methods of generating meaning.

MUD VISITOR BEHAVIOUR: SHOPPING, EATING, TALKING, MAKING

In the pursuit of our art-making as a social, economic, dialogic and material activity, we will dirty the distinctions between spaces and behaviours of the tourist and the artist producer: restaurants, bars, museums, galleries, shopping centres, public transport system, hardware stores.

Guest Lunch: Eat off a table and smash it up Hole in road becomes THE MUD OFFICE: inhabit, fictionalise, reconfigure. Foam furniture production, lounge chairs, garden benches, gallery furniture A bespoke service for the curators: MUD SPATIAL AUDIENCE FLOW Ambivalence and the carnivalesque as a means to criticality. Salvaged objects and concepts Process, discussion, dialogue, research, enquiry. A fictionalised space, between our own rhetoric and the spaces we visit. Embrace the tourist: the inquisitive visitor, the rituals and protocols of host and guest

Through this project we wish to test and critically develop the Mud Office as production agency.
